Round Table - 8th of July

We are pleased to announce we will be holding three round tables in Zoom on Thursday, July 8th from 11:00 am -12:30 pm CET. It will consist of short presentations from each of our panelists, followed by a discussion/Q&A session. Below you find the zoom meeting links. 

Our panelists will focus on the professional context (career path), advices for Early Career Professionals (ECP) in Marine Science, Essential/Transferable Skills ECP should have/look into and challenges as well.

Cátia Monteiro

Cátia is a PostDoc Researcher at the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO-InBIO) in Porto, Portugal. Her expertise is in seaweed ecophysiology and molecular biology, and she is investigating the responses of these primary producers to climate change.

Rita Franco-Santos

Rita Franco-Santos

Rita is a zooplankton ecologist, presently working as a Research Assistant at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, University of Tasmania, in Australia. Her expertise is in feeding ecology and biochemistry. She is also currently involved in projects investigating lipid biochemistry of humpback whales and killer whales. In her free time Rita enjoys diving and hiking around Tasmania.

Roxana Is A Data Analyst At The Australian Institute Of Marine Science (AIMS). Her Work Is Focused On Data Processing, Quality Check/Quality Assurance And Modelling, Using Programming As A Means Towards Exploring Big Data And Semi-Automation.

José M. Fariñas-Franco

José is a lecturer in Applied Freshwater and Marine Biology at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Principal Investigator at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre, and adjunct lecturer at NUI Galway. A marine ecologist and scientific diver, his research focuses on the functioning and biodiversity of marine biogenic habitats, their sensitivity and resilience to human activities, and the role of bivalve and seaweed aquaculture in ecological restoration and ecosystem service provision.

Nicolas is the Executive Director of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre, EMBRC. He is in charge of coordinating activities and services across more than 30 European research institutes and universities supporting marine biological and ecological research.

Taehyun (Jennifer) Park

Taehyun (Jennifer) Park

Taehyun supports the strengthening and coordination of Oceans 5 projects in the East Asia region including Japan, South Korea, China mainland and Taiwan. Together with Apple, she also develops and manages projects in Asia.

Susanna Pakkasmaa

Susanna Pakkasmaa

Susanna is a research advisor at University of Bergen, and works with marine projects. University of Bergen is Norway’s largest marine university, with research and education of a high international standard and several world leading research environments. She holds a PhD in biology from University of Helsinki, Finland, and has worked in governmental agencies and in the academia in Sweden and Denmark before moving to Bergen.

Yaprak Arda

Yaprak is the Marine Programme Officer at IUCN-Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation. Her expertise is in marine conservation, small scale fisheries and marine litter. Her work focuses on governance, marine conservation (strategies, declaration, management, monitoring, evaluation), marine species, biodiversity, ecosystems and habitats and adaptation to climate change in the Mediterranean region.

Marina Espinasse

Marina is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Marine Research in Tromsø, Norway. Her research focuses on the impact of human activities on coastal ecosystems. Her current work involves the development of indicators that reflect how sustainably human use ocean-based resources in northern Norway.

Luca Mirimin

Luca Mirimin is a Lecturer in Aquatic Ecology at Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT, Ireland) and a Principal Investigator in Genetics at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC).Dr Mirimin's expertise focusses on the use of DNA-based molecular tools applied to the conservation of aquatic species as well as sustainable use of natural resources.

Lara Macheriotou

Lara is a Post-Doctoral researcher at the Marine Biology Research Group of Ghent University, Belgium. The aim of her research is to describe and understand biodiversity patterns of deep-sea nematodes globally, and specifically in areas targeted for deep-sea mining in the Pacific Ocean. To achieve this she specialises in the generation and processing of metabarcoding data via High Throughout Sequencing.

Natalya Is A Postdoctoral Researcher In The Department Of Biological Sciences At The University Of Bergen With The HypOnFjordFish Research Group. She Is Also An Affiliate Of The Bjerknes Centre For Climate Research And The SDG Bergen Initiative.

Maryia Khomich

Maryia Khomich

Maryia is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Clinical Science, University of Bergen (Norway); she is interested in the link between the oral microbiome and endotoxin-driven inflammation. Previously, she was working at the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (Nofima, Norway) focusing on the methods for the robust identification of differentially abundant bacteria from dietary intervention trials. She holds a PhD in Aquatic Molecular Microbial Ecology from the University of Oslo, Norway (2017) where she investigated the ecology of planktonic microbes in a unique set of boreal lakes using DNA metabarcoding. She also has work experience as an independent consultant for the FEMS journal and as a volunteer at the Erasmus Mundus Association and the Katapult Ocean Accelerator.
