Study Program

Disclaimer: The course offer is subject to change. For the most recent updates, please refer to the official program page at Ghent University: International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources.

IMBRSea offers a broad yet coherent curriculum that spans the fields of marine sciences and biological resources. With a strong focus on marine biology and ecological processes, the program connects the study of marine organisms and their environments with practical applications in conservation, management, and policy.

Over the course of two years, students follow a dynamic and international study path. During the first three semesters, students study at various IMBRSea consortium partner universities across Europe.

In the first semester, students follow Fundamental Modules at one of the IMBRSea consortium partner universities. These cover the essential subjects of marine science and provide a common foundation for all students independent of the selected university.

The second semester is devoted to Thematic Modules and Professional Practice. Thematic modules allow students to deepen their knowledge in specific areas of marine science, and depending on the module chosen, this takes place at different partner universities. Professional Practice then offers students individual hands-on research or work experience through placements provided by IMBRSea partner universities, companies and NGOs.

At the end of the second semester, in July and August, students take part in a two-week Summerschool at the Tjärnö Marine Station in Sweden, where they gain a full research experience in a unique marine environment together with their fellow IMBRSea students.

In the third semester, students further specialise by choosing from a range of Specialisation Tracks offered at different partner universities. These tracks are designed in close alignment with current career opportunities for marine scientists in Europe. In addition, students complete a 6 ECTS online course, which prepares them for their Master's thesis.

The fourth and final semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis. Students carry out independent research on a topic of their choice related to Marine Biological Resources under the guidance of expert researchers, which may be conducted at any institution worldwide.

At the end of the academic year in June, IMBRSea students gather at the Annual Symposium, hosted at a different partner university each year. The symposium serves as a valuable opportunity for students and staff to meet, share experiences, and collaborate across the IMBRsea community. Students participate in workshops, panel discussions and keynote lectures, and second-year students present their Master's thesis research.
