Concepts and Practices in Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology - Part 3
CPOB-Part 3 is a Practical Course, implementing field work and concepts that were acquired in the first semester and the previous CPOB unit. Part 3 is devoted to field work, data analyses and modeling. Transfer of the theoretical background in biological oceanography and marine ecology into conceptual and practical knowledge.
Course contents
The purpose is to show to the student how to study different ecosystems from the sampling strategy, on-board work to collect samples, sample analysis, data analysis, up to the conceptualization of ecosystems through the initiation of a simple model. Students will have an understanding of the coastal ecosystem functioning using all the knowledge acquired during the different CPOB units.
Final competences
- Develop a sampling strategy (conception and application).
- Work at sea (cruise organization and work on board).
- Oceanographic instrumentation for benthic and pelagic studies.
- Basic Laboratory Practices for Biological Oceanography and Marine Ecology.
- Data acquisition / Data analyses.
- Handle big data basis (SOMLIT data basis).
- Learning how to identify biodiversity patterns from different samples.
- Learning how to build simple models in marine ecology.
- Oral communication.
- Work in a group.
