Marine & Environmental Research (MER) Lab Ltd is an environmental consulting SME formed in 2008, based in Cyprus and operating in Eastern Mediterranean. MER specializes in the marine environment and is equipped with advanced infrastructure/equipment and required expertise to analyse marine biotic and abiotic parameters essential in marine environmental monitoring and research. MER's young and motivated researchers cover a wide spectrum of marine sciences and have successful experience in aquaculture management, consulting environmental monitoring, impact assessments and research programs funded by the Cyprus government and the European Commission.
Taking into account that Cyprus is a marine lessepsian species hotspot, our current research work focuses on baseline/monitoring surveys on native and non-indigenous species. Some of our recent projects include 1) Morphological, physiological and genetic comparisons between the native population of Halophila stipulacea in the Gulf of Aqaba and the Non-indigenous established population in Limassol, 2) Preventing a lionfish invasion in the Mediterranean Sea through early response and targeted Removal (RELIONMED) (LIFE+ Nature and Biodiversity), where many biological and ecological characteristics of Pterois miles in Cyprus will be measured, 3) Baseline survey and monitoring of Non-Indigenous Species (NIS) in two Marine Protected Areas (MPAs - Natura 2000).
Additional research is also implemented on other marine disciplines relevant to Fisheries, Aquaculture as well as marine ecological quality assessment associated with Posidonia oceanica, macrobenthic fauna, and benthic macroalgae.
