ISPA – University Institute is a non-profit private institution (cooperative) devoted to the pursuance of academic excellence in the Psychological, Social and Life Sciences.
ISPA offers an extended range of programmes for Undergraduates, Integrated Master’s, and Doctoral programs in Marine Biology, Behavioural Biology, Psychology, Integrative Biology and Biomedicine, and Neuroscience (some of them in partnerships with other national institutions).
ISPA has a strong international engagement with several agreements with universities worldwide.
Currently, ISPA has over 60 full-time faculty members (74.5% holding PhD’s), and hosts around 1400 students. Faculty members are integrated in 3 R&D Units: MARE Centre in Marine Biology, William James Research Center in Psychology; and Centre for Educational Research in Education.
Following the evaluation of the Portuguese research centres conducted by FCT and ESF, MARE was rated as Excellent, with the highest evaluation in the Natural and Environmental Sciences area. MARE is a multipolar research centre emerging from the union of 4 former R&D Units and integrating 6 Universities. MARE-ISPA is one of such 6 poles. Research covers the study of fish and larval ecology, monitoring and conservation of marine systems, biogeography, phylogeography and evolution, estuarine and freshwater fish and the ecology of marine mammals and birds. MARE-ISPA has Molecular and Ecology fully equipped Labs, certified and fully equipped animal facilities, 2 boats, diving equipment, sampling equipment, an ROV and bioacoustical instruments.
