MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre is a centre for research, technological development and innovation, with units located at Lisbon University, Coimbra University, Azores University, ISPA – University Institute, Évora University, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Leiria Polytechnic Institute and Funchal Marine Biology Station. MARE was classified as Excellent R & D Unit by Foundation for Science and Technology.
The objective of MARE is to seek excellence in the study of aquatic ecosystems and disseminate knowledge to support policies for sustainable development. This mission is achieved through scientific research, education and knowledge and technology transfer to industry, as well as through the dissemination of science, establishing collaborative networks at the regional, national and international levels.
MARE is organised in 3 ecosystem-oriented Research Groups, River Basins, Estuaries and Coastal Zones, and Open Ocean and Deep Sea, and in 11 research thematic lines, as cross cutting issues of the Research Groups, that are clustered under 4 domains:
LIFE: Biogeography, biodiversity, and evolution; Ecology, behaviour and conservation.
ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCES: Hydraulics, water resources and environment; Ocean dynamics and processes; Living and non-living resources; Environmental assessment and ecological risk; Global environmental change; Ecological processes.
TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION: Technological tools for exploration and monitoring; Marine biotechnology.
INFORMATION AND SOCIETY: Policy and governance.
