The Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA) is an Organic Unit of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. Its mission is to carry out scientific research and postgraduate teaching in chemistry, life sciences, and associated technologies, while serving the community and promoting science and technology. ITQB NOVA is one of the leading research centers for the chemical and life sciences in Portugal, and a major national and international resource for basic and applied research. Its origins go back to CTQB (Centro de Tecnologia Química e Biológica) founded in 1989, and incorporated in 1993 into the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa as ITQB.
ITQB NOVA has a strong expertise in Molecular Biosciences, with knowhow in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Molecular and Structural Biology, Biotechnology and Systems Biology, and Chemical Biology. This expertise drives research with impact in two strategic societal challenges: the well-being of human societies (Molecular Basis of Health and Disease) and the environment (Biological Resources and Sustainable Development). ITQB NOVA coordinates two FCT funded Research Units – MOSTMICRO and GREEN-IT - and is involved in a third – iNOVA4HEALTH. Collaboration is strongly encouraged, and this diversity of expertise contributes to a multidisciplinary atmosphere that makes ITQB NOVA unique in the country.
