Universidade Eduardo Mondlane

Universidade Eduardo Mondlane(UEM), founded in 1962, is the oldest and largest public university headquartered in Maputo, Mozambique. UEM is one of the leading university in Africa; endowed with legal personality enjoying scientific, pedagogical, administrative and financial autonomy. Through UEM, many generations of people have passed and today they carry out functions and activities in the most diverse spheres of society, government, social, economic and service sectors.From its inception, UEM history reflects the periods of the country's history, which influenced and determined the process of teaching, research and extension of the country.



Nearly 100 entities from faculties to departments, centers and others organs comprise UEM. The Department of Biological Sciences (DCB) is rather young teaching, research and extension Department of Faculty of Sciences. DCB-UEM have around 50 staff member (around 20% with PhD degree) and nearly 500 students.The main attributions of the DCB are: training of students for undergraduate of four years equivalent to BSc. (Hon.) Namely: Marine, Aquatic and Coastal Biology Course (BMAC); Course on Ecology and Conservation of Terrestrial Biodiversity (ECBT); Course of Biology and (BS) and Applied Biology (B); as well as postgraduate programs Masters in Aquatic Biology and Coastal Ecosystems (BAEC); collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering in the Master course in Food Technology; Together with the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine developed a PhD in Public Health and Biosciences. This Dept has a complex of 10 laboratories aimed at important training and research in field such as physiology, microscopy, ecology including marine, plants, animal, soils and carbon, microbiology and molecular biology as well as having a 5 ha Botanical Gardens and an Herbarium under its premise.



DCB-UEM participates in the implementation of extension activities in different areas of

specialization, training courses and environmental monitoring and assists in advisory bodies and activities to various national and regional bodies among, government agencies, private sector,

non-governmental organizations and other emerging local universities.



Research in marine biology, specially that related to coastal tropical habitats (namely mangroves, coral reefs, seagrasses and coastal dunes systems) is a dominant field of research in the Department of Biological Sciences (BCB); component strengthened over decades given the Marine Biological Station of Inhaca (Estação de Biologia Marítima da Inhaca, EBMI) nearly 80 years old, the oldest in eastern/southern Africa.. EBMI offers ideal site for an array of marine and coastal biology, marine science, socio-economics and management research.
